Orientation
After we have received your completed application form, your School on Wheels' Coordinator will be in touch with you to welcome you to the team, walk you through the rest of the process and answer any questions you may have. Your Coordinator will also let you know about the next orientation dates and schedule a time for you to attend.
Attending an orientation with School on Wheels is part of your application process and will provide you with the history, rules, and policies of School on Wheels. Allow 3 hours for an orientation and please note that Live Scan services will be available at all orientations for $35.
School on Wheels has been working with homeless children for 15 years and we have designed this unique orientation for our new volunteer tutors based on our expertise and experience. You will learn about the many challenges homeless children face, the history and mission of School on Wheels, and what to expect at your first tutoring session. You will then sign up for a tutor training which will focus on your role as a tutor, how to prevent and manage behavior problems, learning styles, as well as how to use our Academic Program for students in kindergarten through 7th grade and our BUS (Believe, Understand, Succeed) Program for students in 8th through 12th grade. Please note that you have to attend an Orientation before attending a tutor training. Our trained staff will give you the tools you need to tutor and prepare you for what will be a very rewarding volunteer experience.
