Associate Manager (Regions 5,7, and 8)
School on Wheels is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the educational needs of unhoused children from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Since 1993, we have served over 50,000 students across six counties in Southern California and partnered with 400+ sites, including shelters and school districts. Each year, thousands of volunteer tutors provide one-on-one tutoring and mentoring to students living in shelters, motels, vehicles, group foster homes, and the streets of Southern California.
Position Overview:
The Associate Manager is responsible for managing a team of coordinators who directly manage our programs in Hollywood, Pasadena, San Fernando, Ventura, and Santa Barbara Counties. The Associate Manager will support their team in reaching their goals through coaching, training, and being in the community with them. The Associate Manager will play a critical role in establishing deadlines, goals, and objectives, while also holding their direct reports accountable to ensure our programs run efficiently across the region to which they are assigned.

Major Responsibilities:
- Coach team members in planning and implementing staff goals and objectives, establishing priorities, monitoring their progress, and ensuring team effectiveness and success in achieving them.
- Support, motivate, and hold accountable assigned team members to increase the number of students tutored, including conducting student outreach in all areas – especially to non-traditional locations such as motels and schools with the highest homeless populations.
- Support, motivate, and hold accountable assigned team members to increase the number of volunteers in our program. Work collaboratively to enhance our volunteer recruitment and retention strategies.
- Collaborate with the Regional Team leadership and team to develop community partnerships for student and volunteer recruitment, and represent SOW in the community.
- Make presentations with team members to appropriate personnel at shelters, motels, group foster homes, and other homeless organizations/agencies to educate them regarding SOW and its work.
- Evaluate and document team member performance and provide ongoing feedback to team members through weekly one-on-one meetings, performance reviews, and updates using our goal tracker.
- Support team growth and retention by implementing professional development plans, identifying learning opportunities for each team member, and ensuring team members have the necessary tools and resources to be successful.
- Communicate and ensure that team members are following SOW policies and procedures; liaise with SOW HR and leadership to support employee relations.
- Participate in recruiting and hiring team members; serve as a temporary backup coordinator in regions when a position is open or an employee is absent.
- Develop and maintain a positive and supportive team atmosphere that encourages each person to be motivated towards our mission and suggests innovative changes.
- Encourage the effective use of technology to improve operations, ensuring team members are well-trained in these areas and in the management of Salesforce.
Required Qualifications:
- Must live in one of the four regions (Hollywood, Pasadena, San Fernando, Ventura, or Santa Barbara Counties) with reliable transportation.
- Minimum of 2 years of direct management/supervisory experience for an education, nonprofit, or social‑service organization.
- Demonstrated success in managing multi‑site programs (e.g., several counties/regions) and leading distributed teams in field‑based environments.
- Experience in setting and achieving operational metrics.
- Proven ability to establish deadlines, goals, and objectives for yourself and direct reports.
- Experience and interest in data management, with a focus on maintaining organized and accurate records to inform decision-making.
- Exhibit strong communication skills, both orally and in writing, with the capacity to deliver effective presentations.
- Demonstrate excellent technology skills, including competence with Google Workspace.
- Ability to represent SOW in the highest manner; exemplify SOW values and ethics.
- Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
- A commitment to continuous learning and professional growth.
- Exhibit cultural sensitivity and empathy for students experiencing homelessness.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with volunteer recruitment, retention, and management.
- Familiarity with partner‑agency relationship building (shelters, motels, foster homes, school districts) and community outreach in non‑traditional settings.
- Experience working with at-risk children.
- Experience using Salesforce.
Working Conditions:
- This is a full-time, hybrid position with a flexible schedule.
- While your primary office location will be your home, you will be required to drive throughout the geographical area assigned to you (Hollywood, Pasadena, San Fernando, Ventura, and Santa Barbara Counties) in order to attend meetings, events, and support your direct reports on a weekly basis.
- Some evenings and Saturdays will be periodically required for work.
- Lifting of donations, including backpacks and school supplies, will be periodically required
- Valid California driver’s license, auto insurance, and use of personal vehicle required.
Salary: The title and salary will be based on the candidate’s qualifications, including education and job-related experience, as well as School on Wheels’ internal equity.
Associate Manager: $53,500 – $55,000 annually| $25.72 – $26.44/h DOE
Manager: $62,000 – $65,000 annually| $29.81/hr – $31.25/h DOE
