Job Description
School on Wheels is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the educational needs of unhoused children from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Since 1993, we have provided tutoring to over 50,000 students across six counties in Southern California and partnered with 400+ sites, including shelters and school districts. Each year, we supply around 5,000 students with school supplies, striving to bridge educational gaps and ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed.
Position Overview
The Administrative and Student Coordinator for the Skid Row Learning Center (SRLC) in Downtown Los Angeles leads parent engagement and student recruitment efforts to support the growth of all SRLC programs. You’ll be a key part of an instructional and administrative team to support Center operations, as well as engaging learning activities and essential teaching support for K-12 students.

Major Responsibilities:
- Conduct student outreach and intake in the Skid Row community to ensure SRLC programming reaches as many students as possible.
- Serve as an instructor support in the after-school and Saturday programs at our Skid Row Learning Center (SRLC) as well as our shelter-based tutoring program at Union Rescue Mission.
- Serve as primary liaison between SRLC and parents, ensuring parents are up-to-date on their child’s progress and behavioral needs and SOW policies.
- Identify and distribute resources for families.
- Maintain accurate records of student enrollment and student attendance.
- Manage material donation process for the SRLC, including coordinating drop-offs with donors, ensuring accurate donation records and receipts, and maintaining storage space.
- Serve as primary administrative support for the SRLC, responsible for greeting visitors, answering the telephone, and maintaining electronic and paper files.
- Ensure that the SRLC is organized, clean, and well-stocked, and that technology and other equipment are functioning properly.
- Manage partnership with LA Food Bank; complete daily paperwork.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is required.
- Cultural sensitivity, empathy, and understanding of the dynamics of families and children experiencing homelessness and immigrant communities.
- Comfortable working with the Skid Row community.
- Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to develop effective presentations.
- Proficient in technology, including Google Workspace tools, Salesforce, online learning platforms, and troubleshooting technology issues.
- A commitment to continuous learning and professional growth.
- Experience working in a nonprofit, classroom, or educational setting is preferred.
Required Training:
Within 120 days of hire: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation/First Aid (CPR) and California Mandated Reporter.
Working Conditions
- This position is required to be in-person at the Skid Row Learning Center in downtown Los Angeles. While the typical working hours are 9:30 am to 6 pm Monday-Friday, evening and weekend work will be required to complete the requirements of this position. School on Wheels offers flex time to accommodate shifting schedules.
- Lifting of material donations, including backpacks, school supplies, etc., is required periodically
Hourly Range:
$20.67 – $24.04 DOE
