Curriculum and Assessment Specialist 

School on Wheels is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the educational needs of unhoused children from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Since 1993, we have provided tutoring to over 50,000 students across six counties in Southern California and partnered with 400+ sites including shelters and school districts. Each year, we supply around 5,000 students with school supplies, striving to bridge educational gaps and ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed. 

Position Overview: 

As a member of the Program team, the Curriculum and Assessment Specialist will play a crucial role in developing and designing a wide range of curriculum and instructional activities, including curriculum development and integration, assessments and data analysis, and building strong partnerships with education support services such as universities and other tutoring organizations. This position will report to the COO. 

Job Type and Location : 

Full-time, Hybrid with a telework agreement. 

Curriculum Responsibilities: 

  • Evaluate (current) curriculum for alignment with the Common Core and effectiveness in reaching students’ learning goals 
    • Modify, design, and implement curriculum changes tailored to the needs of students experiencing homelessness. 
    • Adapt curricula to improve accessibility for students with different learning needs. ● Develop and implement effective strategies and practices to support student learning. ● Communicate with volunteer tutors regularly and through periodic needs assessments to gauge the effectiveness and ease of instructional materials. 
  • Provide training to staff and other stakeholders such as parents and tutors. ● Incorporate technology such as AI and multimedia elements into the curriculum to enhance learning experiences 

Assessment Responsibilities: 

  • Evaluate current assessment processes, identifying strengths and weaknesses to enhance or improve the effectiveness of student evaluations.
  • Analyze student assessment results and use this information to create and improve the curriculum. 
  • Manage a team of volunteers, ambassadors and VISTAS responsible for executing assessments, ensuring they are well-trained and supported in their roles. ● Prepare reports on curriculum and assessment outcomes for team members, funders, and other stakeholders. 

Other Responsibilities: 

  • Collaborate with parents/guardians and members of the regional team to provide educational resources and support to students. 
  • Research and recommend educational resources, materials, and technology tools that support organization goals. 
  • Collaborate with community partners to enhance educational services and resources available for students. 
  • Collaborate with internal departments to streamline and improve communication and processes 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Curriculum Development, or a related field ○ Three (3) years teaching experience 
  • Proven experience in curriculum development and assessment design, preferably in K-12 education 
  • Familiarity with the challenges faced by students experiencing homelessness or lower socioeconomic backgrounds, and knowledge of trauma-informed educational approaches 
  • Knowledge of diverse learning styles, cultural considerations, and accessibility principles in curriculum design 
  • Experience with Google Suite, database (Salesforce) and AI Tools 

Salary Range: 

$60,000 – $70,000/year DOE
