Student Support Coordinator – East LA, San Gabriel Valley and the I.E.

Job Summary

This full-time position is responsible for the tender love and care of all things relating to SOW students.  Working as a team member, this includes student outreach and recruitment,  working with parents and students to strengthen relationships with volunteers and School on Wheels, conducting pre- and post-assessments and measuring outcomes, working with schools, shelters, community groups,  and other partners. 

This position will cover East LA, the San Gabriel Valley and the Inland Empire, including East LA, Boyle Heights, El Monte, Whittier, Pico Rivera, Covina, West Covina, Pomona, Chino, Corona/Norco, La Verne, Ontario, San Dimas and Upland. The position can be based at our Los Angeles office, or be home based, depending on experience. If home based,  the position also requires at least two days per month at our Los Angeles office, plus attendance in person at quarterly team and development meetings. During the first 90 days, more frequent “in office” time will be required depending on county and state requirements during COVID-19.

Major responsibilities are outlined for the normal operations of School on Wheels, but are currently adapted for safety reasons due to COVID-19.

Major Responsibilities

Student Outreach and Recruitment 

  • Focus on and conducting outreach to shelters, motels, schools, campgrounds, vehicles.
  • Conduct monthly visits to shelters to identify new students and enhance shelter relations.
  • Identify and meet with new transitional and emergency shelters, group foster homes, seasonal shelters and after-school programs. 
  • Work with Volunteer Support Coordinators to develop and implement formal outreach strategy for unsheltered students.

Strengthening of Student/Parent Relationship with SOW

  • Conduct pre-tutoring conference with parents at non-emergency shelters to establish goals for tutoring.
  • Attend shelter parent meetings/shelter events; talk about education and SOW at every meeting, be knowledgeable about and provide available resources to parents/guardians.
  • Ensure regular and ongoing communications/coordination with student families, including offering to participate in IEP meetings as necessary.
  • Develop plan to ensure participation in tutoring over summer months and work with Volunteer Support Coordinator to organize students and obtain all necessary documentation for field trips, summer camps, and other opportunities. 
  • Work with Volunteer Support Coordinators to deliver school supplies and backpacks to students. 
  • Market and identify students for SOW scholarships; coordinate with college opportunities/ scholarships.

Student/Volunteer Matching, Appreciation and Tracking

  • Work as a team with Volunteer Support Coordinators to: 
    • Identify best possible match for both student and volunteer, focusing on one-on-one matches. 
    • Ensure assessments are completed after the second session.
    • Create a space conducive to tutoring.
    • Identify Star students every month. 
    • Develop student workshops and group tutoring plans.
  • Identify student advocates, keep track of SOW success stories and SOW alumni. .  

Outcome Measurement

  • Implement processes and SOW-specific plan for measuring outcomes through digital learning tools, academic program assessments,  literacy and other assessments.
  • Collect and analyze results of various program assessments, and enter data into SF database. 
  • Develop effective methods of working with schools to measure student progress.
  • Research and brainstorm new ways to assess SOW students and work with Program Team to test and evaluate new assessment tools.
  • Assist with administration and collection of annual student and parent surveys.

Academic and BUS programs

  • Test/evaluate changes to the academic program, including new K-3 literacy program and provide feedback.
  • Assist in the enhancement, implementation and evaluation of the BUS program, including new academic resources for high school students.


  • Develop synergistic partnerships with focus on schools (HLOs + teachers/principals), shelters (staff + management), homeless student advocacy groups, and homeless/community organizations.
  • Participate in regional HLO meetings and homeless counts.
  • Provide information and follow-up for individual school liaisons.
  • Develop a process for working with teachers and work with Volunteer Support Coordinator to implement effective communications process for volunteers.
  • Visit schools (principals, counselors, and staff meetings) on a regular basis.
  • Partner with social services agencies (DPSS, DCFS, 211, FSC’s)
  • Assist in implementing student programming partnerships (Girl Scouts, PBS, Junior League, etc), including identifying students for participation and facilitating with location staff.
  • Partner with after-school programs to provide services to students in an after-school setting, with focus on implementing digital learning.

Policy Research and Advocacy 

  • Research and become SOW expert on policies, regulations, rights regarding homelessness and education.
  • Research and become knowledgeable about school districts and education policies and regulations.
  • Attend local meetings about district-specific policies and regulations.
  • Participate in city council meetings, housing authority briefs, updates and webinars through NAEHCY.
  • Be aware of upcoming legislation and impact on students and emerging/shifting areas of need.
  • Be knowledgeable and have an understanding of Common Core standards, Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 and McKinney Vento Act and how they impact SOW students.

Database and Administration

  • Update database with all student information on a regular basis, including notes, demographic changes, and assessment data.
  • Work with the Program Team to develop and test methods for tracking student progress and usage of digital learning tools.
  • Analyze data and work with appropriate teams to develop most effective ways to report results.
  • Maintain updated schedule and calendar of all activities and keep lines of communication open to the Volunteer Support Coordinators. 
  • Coordinate with the Volunteer Support Coordinators to maintain all forms and documents relating to students in a secured location.

Working Conditions

  • Frequent early evening and Saturday work required.
  • Significant driving required; valid California driver’s license, auto insurance and use of personal vehicle (mileage reimbursed).
  • Lifting of material donations, including backpacks, school supplies, etc. required periodically.
