Student Support Coordinator – San Gabriel Valley, Whittier, Long Beach, & South Bay 

School on Wheels is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the educational needs of unhoused children from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Since 1993, we have provided tutoring to over 50,000 students across six counties in Southern California and partnered with 400+ sites including shelters and school districts. Each year, we supply around 5,000 students with school supplies, striving to bridge educational gaps and ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed. 

Position Overview: 

As a Student Support Coordinator, you are responsible for student outreach and recruitment. You will support students and work with parents to strengthen their relationships with volunteers. The Student Support Coordinator will conduct pre-and post-assessments, measure student outcomes, and work with schools, shelters, and other community partners. The Volunteer Engagement Coordinator oversees the following geographic areas: San Gabriel Valley, Whitter (Region 1), and Long Beach & South Bay (Region 4). 

Job Type and Location : 

Full Time, Hybrid with a telework agreement 

Weekends required 

Student Outreach, Recruitment, and Partnerships 

  • Conduct student outreach at shelters, community resource centers, motels, and schools. Collaborate with new transitional and emergency shelters, after-school programs, schools, advocacy groups, and social service agencies to enhance our program. 
  • Work with the Volunteer Engagement Coordinator to develop and implement outreach strategies for unsheltered students. 

Strengthening of Student/Parent Relationship with School on Wheels Attend shelter parent meetings and shelter events to talk about School on Wheels and provide available resources to parents/guardians. 

  • Ensure regular and ongoing communications/coordination with our families. Identify students for School on Wheels scholarships, and opportunities for post-secondary support with parents and students. 
  • Coordinate and organize 1 or 2 site-specific events annually to enhance partnerships, better engage, and celebrate student achievements. 

Student/Volunteer Matching, Appreciation, and Tracking 

  • Work as a team with Volunteer Engagement Coordinators to:
    • Identify the best match for both student and volunteer, 
    • Deliver devices, hotspots, and supplies to students who qualify for our program. Ensure pre and post-assessments are completed. 
    • Identify star students every month.
  • Identify parent and student advocates and keep track of School on Wheels success stories and alumni. 

Database Update and Administration 

  • Utilize Salesforce to keep accurate student and partnership information Update student information regularly, including notes and demographic changes 

Skills and Qualifications: 

  • 1-3 years working with students or with families experiencing homelessness. Knowledge of IEPs, Common Core, and student rights. 
  • Must be comfortable with outreach in various capacities, including working in homeless shelters and surrounding areas in Whitter and Long Beach. 
  • Local travel is required: a valid California driver’s license, auto insurance, and personal vehicle use. 
  • Cultural sensitivity and empathy towards students experiencing homelessness. Bilingual English and Spanish are preferred but not required. 
  • Excellent oral, written, and presentation communication skills are a must. You are able to connect with people at all levels – volunteers, shelter staff and management, homeless families, and students of all ages and backgrounds. 
  • Must be highly organized and efficient in time management skills; this is a fast-paced position with competing priorities. 
  • Excellent computer skills are required; experience with SalesForce and Google Suite is a plus. 
  • Lifting of material donations, including backpacks, school supplies, etc., is required periodically 

Hourly Rate: 

$20.00 – 25.00
