Volunteer Engagement Coordinator – Long Beach, Southbay (Region 4)
School on Wheels is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the educational needs of students from kindergarten through twelfth grade experiencing homelessness. Since 1993, we have provided tutoring to over 50,000 students across six counties in Southern California and partnered with 400+ sites including shelters and school districts. Each year, we supply around 5,000 students with school supplies, striving to bridge educational gaps and ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed.
Position Overview:
As the Volunteer Engagement Coordinator, your primary responsibility is to recruit, manage, and support dedicated volunteers who are interested in tutoring students experiencing homelessness. By guiding and nurturing these volunteers, you help ensure that students receive the educational support they need. The Volunteer Engagement Coordinator oversees the following geographic areas: Long Beach | San Pedro | Carson | Lakewood | Norwalk| Compton| Lawndale |Torrance| Gardena

Full Time, Hybrid with a telework agreement
Weekends are occasionally required for tabling, presentations, and events
Major Responsibilities:
- Organize and conduct volunteer training sessions to ensure volunteers are fully prepared for their roles while providing ongoing support and development opportunities for volunteers.
- Develop and implement strategies to recruit new volunteers through online platforms, community events, and partnerships with local organizations.
- Conduct follow-up advanced volunteer training by working with experienced volunteers. Focus on volunteer retention and appreciation – to acknowledge their impact on students.
- Serve as a liaison between volunteers and staff to ensure clear communication and effective collaboration.
- Work with the student coordinator to find appropriate and long-lasting tutor/student matches.
- Facilitate first tutoring sessions in person and online at various locations throughout Long Beach and the South Bay.
- Maintain accurate records of volunteer participation, hours logged, and impact. Highlight star volunteers and students share success stories.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Experience in volunteer coordination, education, or related fields. Must be comfortable with outreach in various capacities, including working in homeless shelters and surrounding areas in Long Beach and South Bay. Local travel is required: a valid California driver’s license, auto insurance, and personal vehicle use.
- Cultural sensitivity and empathy towards students experiencing homelessness. Excellent oral, written, and presentation communication skills are a must. You are able to connect with people at all levels – volunteers, shelter staff and management, families experiencing homelessness, and students of all ages and backgrounds.
- Must be highly organized and efficient in time management skills; this is a fast-paced position with competing priorities.
- Excellent computer skills are required; experience with SalesForce and Google Suite is a plus.
- Lifting of material donations, including backpacks, school supplies, etc., is required periodically.
Hourly Rate:
$20.00 – $25.00 DOE
