Volunteer Engagement Coordinator – South Los Angeles (Region 02) 

As a Volunteer Engagement Coordinator, you are a key member of our Regional Team and will work throughout the South Los Angeles community. You will build meaningful relationships in the community through outreach, recruit and support volunteer tutors, and help ensure students are matched to volunteer tutors who can make a lasting impact.

The Volunteer Engagement Coordinator strengthens engagement with volunteers, students, families, and partners throughout South and South East Los Angeles, including, but not limited to, Compton, Watts, Lynwood, Huntington Park, Hawthorne, Manhattan Beach, Bell Gardens, and Downey.

Job Type and Location :

Applicants must reside in the South Los Angeles (Region 02) service area

  • Full-time, hybrid position with a telework agreement. 
  • Personal vehicle use is required for field-based outreach, community events, presentations, and first sessions on a minimum weekly basis. 
  • Evening and weekend work are often required to supervise the first tutoring sessions, communicate with volunteers, and complete the requirements of this position. School on Wheels offers flex time to accommodate shifting schedules.

Volunteer Recruitment, Engagement, and Retention 

  • Develop and implement strategies to recruit new volunteers through online platforms, community events, and partnerships with local organizations.
  • Provide ongoing support, development, and coaching to volunteer tutors who are working with students. 
  • Organize and conduct in-person and online volunteer training sessions to ensure volunteers are fully prepared for their roles.
  • Focus on volunteer retention and appreciation to acknowledge the impact on students. 
  • Establish rapport and increase retention with volunteers through phone calls, emails, in-person check-ins, and volunteer appreciation events. 
  • Maintain accurate records of volunteer participation, hours logged, and impact.
  • Highlight star volunteers and students by sharing success stories in our newsletter.

Student Matching and Program Support 

  • Work as a team with your Student Support Coordinator to facilitate student volunteer matching:
    • Identify the best match for both student and volunteer, 
    • Ensure pre- and post-assessments are completed.
    • Identify star students throughout the year.
    • Recruit students for our program by partnering with school districts, homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, and group homes, and conducting outreach.
  • Facilitate first tutoring sessions between students and tutors, both in-person and virtually. 
  • Actively participate in team meetings and individual supervision meetings. 
  • Utilize Salesforce to keep accurate student, volunteer, and partnership information. 

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Must live within the South Los Angeles ‘Region 02’ area: South Los Angeles| Hawthorne| Huntington Park| Bell Gardens| Downey
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience coordinating, managing, or supporting volunteers, or external partnerships. 
  • Comfortable conducting community outreach, presenting to groups, and building relationships with diverse audiences.
  • Bilingual Spanish-speaking is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace; Experience with Salesforce is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in volunteer coordination, education, or related fields. 
  • Familiarity with South Los Angeles communities and organizations, with the ability to engage and build relationships with community partners.
  • Excellent oral, written, and presentation communication skills. You will connect with- volunteers, shelter staff, families experiencing homelessness, and students of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Cultural humility, empathy, and sensitivity towards students experiencing homelessness.
  • Must be comfortable with outreach in various capacities, including working in homeless shelters and surrounding areas.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities in fast-paced environments.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively as part of a team.
  • Valid California driver’s license, auto insurance, and personal vehicle use.
  • Lifting of material donations (backpacks, school supplies, etc.) is required periodically.

Hourly Rate: 

$22.00 – $25.00 DOE

The title and rate will be based on the candidate’s qualifications, including education and job-related experience, as well as School on Wheels’ internal equity.
