Associate Volunteer Engagement Coordinator
School on Wheels is a nonprofit organization with hundreds of volunteers who give their time, talents, and support to the educational needs of unhoused children. School on Wheels aims to enhance educational opportunities for children — kindergarten through twelfth grade without a home. Since 1993, our mission has been to shrink educational gaps and provide students with the highest quality education possible.
Since 1993, we have
- Provided mentoring and tutoring for more than 50,000 students.
- Reached six counties in Southern California.
- Partnered with 400+ sites, including shelters, school districts, and after-school programs.
- Supplying approximately 5,000 students with school supplies yearly.
Position Overview:
The Associate Volunteer Engagement Coordinator drives organizational growth by strengthening and increasing engagement with the volunteers, students, families, and partners throughout Ventura, Oxnard, Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, and Santa Barbara. This role is responsible for ensuring our program is running efficiently throughout their geographical region, and the needs of our students and volunteers are being met.
Major Responsibilities:
- Recruit, train, and support a team of volunteers, ensuring they have the tools to tutor their students online and in person.
- Focus on volunteer retention, showing volunteers the impact they have on our students.
- Establish rapport with volunteers through phone calls, emails, in-person check-ins, and volunteer appreciation events.
- Recruit students for our program by partnering with school districts, homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, and group homes and conducting outreach.
- Ensure regular and ongoing communications/coordination with student families and the shelters we partner with.
- Deliver devices, hotspots, school supplies, and backpacks to students continuously.
- Identify the best match for both student and volunteer, focusing on one-on-one matches.
- If a student/tutor match is unsuccessful, work with the student, their family, and the tutor to find the best solution. If necessary, re-match both parties.
Required Qualifications:
- Must live in “Region 8”, encompassing Ventura, Oxnard, Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, and Santa Barbara County. A complete map can be found here.
- Demonstrate excellent technology skills, including competence with Google Workspace.
- Ability to represent SOW in the highest manner; exemplify SOW values and ethics.
- Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Exhibit cultural sensitivity and empathy for students experiencing homelessness.
- Ability to perform in a team environment while working independently.
- 1-3 years experience managing volunteers.
- 1-3 years experience managing external partnerships and doing community outreach.
- Passionate about education and working with students experiencing homelessness.
- Must be comfortable with outreach in various capacities, including working in homeless shelters and surrounding areas.
- Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills. You need to be able to connect with people at all levels – volunteers, shelter staff, families experiencing homelessness, and students of all ages and backgrounds.
Working Conditions:
- While your primary office location will be your home, you will be required to drive throughout your region (Ventura, Oxnard, Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, and Santa Barbara County) to attend meetings with shelters / potential partners in the community, to drop off school supplies to students, to facilitate first sessions between students and volunteers, etc.
- Some early evenings and some Saturday work will be periodically required.
- Lifting of donations, including backpacks and school supplies, will be periodically required.
- Valid California driver’s license, auto insurance, and use of a personal vehicle are required.

- Hourly Salary: $19.23 – $22.12 DOE.
