Family Literacy Month

Happy National Family Literacy Month!

The month of November encourages us to come together with our friends and family and read. We have some great things planned to celebrate!

Our students will share their writing on a writing-centered Padlet page (our internal student social media) run by our wonderful tutor, Emmy! Your student can post their writing all year long, starting this month. Please ask your student to post their original design for a book cover (an existing book or one of the student’s own creation) on this page by December 5th, which will enter them into our raffle. The three randomly selected winners will win $25 gift cards to Barnes and Noble! The gift cards can be used for purchases in-person or online. Your student can create their book cover by adding to this pdf, on google slides, or using a free canva account (advanced option).

Tips for practicing reading

  • Turn on closed captions when watching television, movies, or playing video games.
  • Read street signs and public transportation signs when you’re on the move.
  • After selecting books, take a moment to read the first page together and talk about what they’re curious to find out to boost anticipation.

Resources

  • San Bernardino County Library is partnering with School on Wheels to issue e-library cards to all of our students. Students do not have to provide any information for the card and do not have to be residents of San Bernardino County. These cards will give students access to all of the library’s digital content and will remain valid for 10 years. Please check out this flier for more information on what the cards provide. Please sign up for your student’s age group: K-4th grade, 5th-8th grade, or 9th-12th grade. 
  • Through the myON ebook library, your student can access thousands of digital books to read during and outside your tutoring sessions. Sign up for myOn for your student’s age group: K-4th grade, 5th-8th grade, or 9th-12th grade.
  • The StoryGraph app for reading recommendations (and review The StoryGraph Guide to learn how to use it).
  • The Florida Center for Reading Research provides tips and resources for educators, families, and communities who want to promote literacy.

¡Feliz Mes de la Alfabetización Familiar!

El mes de noviembre nos invita a reunirnos con nuestros amigos y familiares y leer. ¡Tenemos grandes cosas planeadas para celebrar!

¡Nuestros estudiantes compartirán sus escritos en una página Padlet centrada en la escritura (nuestra red social interna para estudiantes) dirigida por nuestra maravillosa tutora, Emmy! Su estudiante puede publicar sus escritos durante todo el año, a partir de este mes.   • La Biblioteca del Condado de San Bernardino se asociará con School on Wheels para emitir tarjetas de biblioteca electrónica a todos nuestros estudiantes.
