Program Development Coordinator – Training and Education

School on Wheels is a nonprofit organization made up of hundreds of volunteers, who give their
time, talents, and support to the educational needs of children experiencing homelessness.
Founded in 1993, the mission of School on Wheels is the enhancement of educational
opportunities for children without a home, from kindergarten through the twelfth grade. Our goal
is to shrink the gaps in the education of these children and provide them with the highest quality
education possible.

Job Summary:

School on Wheels is seeking a dedicated and passionate Program Development Coordinator – Training
and Education to join our team. This position plays a crucial role in providing comprehensive training
and support to our volunteers who work with students experiencing homelessness from Kindergarten
through 12th grade. The Training and Education Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing
and ensuring the effective design, coordination, and delivery of training and development
programs for School on Wheels volunteers, including developing and delivering introductory and
group training sessions, coordinating webinars, and providing ongoing skills development to
volunteers. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in education, experience in
training and development, and a commitment to addressing the unique needs of unhoused
students.

Training Responsibilities:

  • Conduct introductory training sessions to familiarize new volunteers with School on Wheels’ mission, policies, and procedures.
    ○ Maintain a welcoming and inclusive space as one of the first contacts between School on Wheels and our volunteers.
  • Create comprehensive training materials for new volunteers, including manuals, presentations, and interactive activities.
  • Schedule all trainings and keep accurate records including volunteer training attendance, feedback, and evaluations.
  • Facilitate advanced training sessions for existing volunteers to further enhance their skills and knowledge in supporting students experiencing homelessness.
  • Create comprehensive training materials for parents/guardians aimed at equipping them with tools to support their children’s educational journey.

Research responsibilities:

  • Identify relevant topics related to the educational needs of unhoused students, such as the rights of unhoused students, mental health awareness, academic interventions, and community resources.
    ○ Conduct needs assessments to determine volunteer training and development requirements based on current and strategic organizational goals.
  • Stay informed about the latest developments in education, homelessness, and related fields through professional development opportunities, workshops, and literature reviews.
  • Incorporate evidence-based practices and innovative approaches into the training curriculum to ensure volunteers receive high-quality instruction and support.
    ○ Stay up-to-date on the latest training methods and technologies, including e-learning platforms and digital training tools, to enhance learning experiences.
  • Provide regular updates on volunteer training activities, outcomes, and areas for improvement.
  • Collaborate with the program team to evaluate efforts to assess the effectiveness of training programs and identify areas of improvement.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in education, social work, psychology, or a related field.
  • Previous experience in Education, including developing and implementing training programs. Prior experience in volunteer management is a plus.
  • Candidate must have a thorough understanding of strength-based practices in Kindergarten-12th grade education.
  • Familiarity with issues related to homelessness, trauma-informed care, and/or working with underserved populations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage with volunteers, parents, and School on Wheels staff.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining communication with appropriate staff.
  • Proficiency in technology to facilitate training sessions, including operating Zoom (communication platform), PowerPoint presentations, Google slides, etc. as well as troubleshooting audiovisual issues.
  • Familiarity with webinar platforms and online learning management systems is a plus.
  • Capability to represent School on Wheels with utmost professionalism and embody the organization’s values, integrity, and ethical standards at all times.

Working Conditions:

  • Evening and weekend work required.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to transportation, as the role may involve traveling to different locations for training sessions and meetings.
  • Candidates for this hybrid position should anticipate a combination of remote work and in-person meetings and presentations, fostering flexibility and collaboration.
