Administrative and Student Coordinator

As an Administrative and Student Coordinator, you are a key on-site team member at our Skid Row Learning Center (SRLC) in Downtown Los Angeles. This position plays a critical role in ensuring students and families feel welcomed, supported, and connected to services.

This is a highly interactive, in-person position in which you will lead parent engagement and student recruitment efforts, support the growth of SRLC programs, provide instructional and administrative support, engage in learning activities, and provide teaching support for K-12 students. The ideal candidate is organized, compassionate, bilingual (English/Spanish), and comfortable working in a dynamic community-based setting.

Job Type and Location :

This is a full-time, non-exempt, in-person position at 600 E. 7th Street #109, Los Angeles, CA 90021

  • Typical Hours: Monday through Friday, 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM. Weekend work is required once a month for a Saturday session (10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.) to fulfill this position’s requirements. School on Wheels offers flex time to accommodate shifting schedules.
  • Lifting of material donations, including backpacks, school supplies, etc., is required periodically.

Major Responsibilities: 

Student & Family Engagement

  • Conduct student outreach and intake in the Skid Row community to ensure SRLC programming reaches as many students as possible. 
  • Serve as the primary liaison for parents/guardians, providing updates on attendance, progress, and program expectations.
  • Identify and distribute resources for families.  
  • Serve as an instructor support in the after-school and Saturday programs at our Skid Row Learning Center (SRLC) as well as our shelter-based tutoring program at Union Rescue Mission. 

Center Operations & Administration

  • Serve as primary administrative support for the SRLC.
  • Greet visitors, answer phone lines, and maintain electronic and paper files. 
  • Track and maintain accurate student enrollment and attendance data.
  •  Manage material donation process for the SRLC, including coordinating drop-offs with donors, ensuring accurate donation records and receipts, and maintaining storage space. 
  • Manage partnership paperwork and coordination with the LA Food Bank.
  • Help ensure the center remains organized, welcoming, and fully stocked.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is required.
  • At least 1 year of experience working directly with children, youth, or families.
  • Availability to work fully in person in Downtown Los Angeles.
  • Comfortable working in a community serving families experiencing homelessness. Cultural sensitivity, empathy, and understanding of the dynamics of families and children experiencing homelessness and immigrant communities is required.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to develop effective presentations.
  • Experience working in a nonprofit, classroom, or community-based setting is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace and basic database systems (Salesforce experience a plus).

Required Training:
Within 120 days of hire: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/First Aid (CPR) and California Mandated Reporter.

Hourly Rate: 

$20.67 – $24.04 DOE

The title and rate will be based on the candidate’s qualifications, including education and job-related experience, as well as School on Wheels’ internal equity.
