Student Support Coordinator, South and West Los Angeles (Regions 02 & 03)
As a Student Support Coordinator, you are responsible for student outreach and recruitment. You will support students and work closely with parents to strengthen their relationships with volunteers. The Student Support Coordinator will conduct outreach to local shelters, schools, and other community partners to connect students and families to SOW tutoring services. This role also supports tutors in completing assessments and measuring student outcomes. The Student Support Coordinator oversees the following geographic areas: South Los Angeles (Region 02) and West Los Angeles (Region 03), including but not limited to Santa Monica, Venice, Mid-City, Koreatown, Culver City, Inglewood, Watts, Lynwood, Huntington Park, Hawthorne, Bell Gardens, and Downey.
Compensation and Work Model
To be considered for this role, applicants must currently reside in the South or West Los Angeles County service area.
- Compensation: The range for this position is $22.00-$25.00/hr, DOE. The title and rate will be based on the candidate’s qualifications, including job-related experience and internal equity.
- Position Type: Full-time, hybrid position with a telework agreement.
- Travel Expectations: Local travel to Regions 02 and 03 is required. School on Wheels offers paid drive time and mileage reimbursement.
- Personal vehicle use is required for field-based outreach, community events, presentations, and first sessions on a weekly basis. Valid California driver’s license and auto insurance are required.
- Evening and weekend work are often required to supervise the first tutoring sessions, communicate with volunteers, and complete the requirements of this position. School on Wheels offers flex time to accommodate shifting schedules.
- Physical Requirements: Lifting of material donations, including backpacks and school supplies, is required periodically.
What You’ll Do
Student Outreach, Recruitment, and Partnerships
- Conduct student outreach at shelters, community resource centers, motels, and schools.
- Collaborate with new transitional and emergency shelters, after-school programs, schools, advocacy groups, and social service agencies to enhance our program.
- Work with the Volunteer Engagement Coordinator to develop and implement outreach strategies for unsheltered students.
Strengthening the Student/Parent Relationship with School on Wheels
- Attend shelter parent meetings and events to present on School on Wheels and provide available resources to parents/guardians.
- Achieve regional and organizational goals related to student placements, referrals, and one-on-one matches.
- Ensure regular, ongoing communication and coordination with families.
- Identify students for School on Wheels scholarships and postsecondary support opportunities, in collaboration with parents and students.
- Coordinate and organize site-specific events to strengthen partnerships, better engage students, and celebrate student achievements.
Student/Volunteer Matching, Appreciation, and Tracking
- Partner with the Volunteer Engagement Coordinators to identify the best student-volunteer match.
- Deliver devices, hotspots, and supplies to students who qualify for our program.
- Ensure pre- and post-assessments are completed.
- Identify and celebrate star students throughout the year.
- Identify parent and student advocates, and track School on Wheels success stories and alumni.
- Utilize Salesforce to keep accurate student and partnership information.
- Actively participate in team meetings and individual supervision meetings
Required Qualifications
- At least 2 years of experience conducting outreach, community engagement, or case management with children and/or families.
- Must be comfortable with outreach in various capacities, including working in homeless shelters and surrounding areas in South and West Los Angeles.
- Cultural sensitivity and empathy towards students experiencing homelessness.
- Excellent oral, written, and presentation communication skills are required. You are able to connect with people at all levels – volunteers, shelter staff and management, homeless families, and students of all ages and backgrounds.
- Must be highly organized and efficient with time management; this is a fast-paced position with competing priorities.
- Excellent computer skills are required; experience with Salesforce and Google Suite is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual Spanish-speaking is strongly preferred.
- At least one year of experience working with students or with families experiencing homelessness is preferred.
- Knowledge of IEPs, Common Core, and student rights is preferred.
