Online Workshop: Demystifying K-7 Math Common Core Standards

This online workshop is open to both active tutors as well as tutors completing our application process. The workshop, however, does not substitute for the mandatory in-person Tutor Training required of new applicants. Please refer to our event calendar to register for a Tutor Training.

Hosted by Kelsey Ritzel, Associate Director of the High Road School in Norwalk, Connecticut, this workshop will help participants better understand the rationale behind and the implementation of common core standards in math. Participants will learn how the standards are organized, including both general and grade-specific standards. The standards “Operations and Algebraic Thinking,” “Numbers and Operations in Base Ten,” and “Numbers and Operations—Fractions” will be the main focus of the presentation. Kelsey will unpack these three standards to show the learning progressions from Kindergarten to 7th grade. Participants will also gain a better understanding of the way in which the standards are taught and the rationale behind the new teaching practices and techniques. Finally, Kelsey will share tutoring resources and answer participants’ questions

About the Presenter: Kelsey Ritzel is the Associate Director of the High Road School in Norwalk, CT, a nonpublic Special Education school for children with emotional and learning disabilities. Prior to moving to New York, Kelsey worked as an elementary and middle school Special Education teacher in Los Angeles and Baltimore. While living in Los Angeles, Kelsey volunteered as a tutor at the School on Wheels Skid Row Learning Center. She earned her MA in teaching from Notre Dame of Maryland University with a dual certification in Elementary Education and Special Education.
