School on Wheels Jumps into Action to Help Those Affected by the Wildfires

By Giving List Staff   |   January 23, 2025

School on Wheels was recently featured in The Giving List Los Angeles and an article from The LA Rams about the “LA Strong” donation event at SoFi Stadium for families displaced from the wildfires. School on Wheels attended the event and passed out backpacks, school supplies, and resources on our programs and services.

School on Wheels provides educational assistance to children and youth experiencing homelessness. It offers one-on-one online and in-person tutoring to students living in shelters, motels, vehicles, on the streets, and group homes throughout southern California.

Homelessness does not discriminate, and their team leaped into action last week as the fires displaced hundreds of families in LA and the surrounding areas. They teamed up with school districts and other nonprofits to provide backpacks, school supplies, and resources to those who had lost their homes.

During times of crisis, you look for the helpers. School on Wheels is made up of thousands of volunteers who help children every day. You can join their efforts by becoming a volunteer tutor, donating school supplies and backpacks, or making a financial contribution. Your support can make a difference.

Becoming a volunteer can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. They are currently seeking:

  • In-person volunteer tutors for students who are 18 and older,  live in LA County, Orange County, Ventura County, San Bernadino County, Riverside County, or Santa Barbara County, are willing and able to commute to and from an in-person location: a homeless shelter or public space such as a library, coffee shop, etc.
  • Online volunteer tutors who are 18 and older, live in California and are comfortable tutoring in a digital environment.
  • In-person volunteer tutors for their Skid Row Learning Center in downtown Los Angeles who are 18 and older.

*All volunteers must commit to at least 1 hour per week.
